Frequently Asked Questions

Where are you from?

Kentucky. I grew up on a farm way out in the middle of nowhere. We raised animals and vegetables, we fished and hunted, we canned and preserved. I’ve lived in Los Angeles now for about two decades.

How did you get started?

In the early 00s I looked into going to culinary school, it was going to cost tens of thousands of dollars. I went to France instead, then Japan, then India. I started taking photos to document everything, so I could study later. I’m still learning.

Are you in the industry?

No. I am not a chef or a journalist. I’m not really even a photographer. I do intend to open my own thing one day, but closer to 2040 (no joke). Until then, I travel, I eat, I study and I occasionally make things with the material I gather. Like this book. Do I follow the industry? Yes, from top to bottom, I have for over 25 years.

What kind of camera do you use?

I have never been a DSLR person, I’ve owned mirrorless, but I prefer even smaller cameras. My largest camera is a Canon G1 X Mark II. I’ve used a G12, various film cameras and I have an iPhone.

Where have I seen your work before?

At one point or another my photos have appeared in several publications, a full list is here. You also may have seen my photos here. I don’t post restaurant reviews. I’m not a critic. Even so, I never take anything for free and I try to stay under the radar.

Where can I follow you?

You can follow me here. I don’t post on Instagram but this is me. I have an archive on Flickr. I had a Tumblr once. That’s not me on TikTok, Twitter, Facebook, Bluesky or Mastadon, etc.
